QUOTE OF THE DAY: “ANYTHING ENCOURAGED IMPROVES”
Memory Verse: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, …”. Romans 12:6-8.
There is no better exercise for strengthening one’s heart than stooping to lift somebody else. Think about it; your best friends are the ones who encourage you. No one ever wants to stay around somebody who always talks people down. One day, Dr. Maxwell Maltz interviewed the son of a successful businessman. The boy had refused to take over the family business after his dad’s death, even though it would have made him wealthy. He explained, ‘you do not understand the relationship I had with my father. He was a driven man who came up the hard way.
His objective was to teach me self-reliance and he thought the best way to do it was never to encourage or praise me. Every day, we played catch in the yard. [pullquote]No one ever wants to stay around somebody who always talks people down. [/pullquote]The idea was for me to catch the ball ten straight times. I would catch it eight or nine times, but always on that tenth throw he’d do everything possible to make me miss it. He would throw it on the ground or over my head so I had no chance of catching it. He then paused tearfully and said that’s why I have to get away; I want to catch that tenth ball’.
This young man grew up feeling he could never measure up, never be perfect enough to please his father. Does this sound familiar? William James said, ‘the deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated. According to Judges 6:12, the words of encouragement spoken by the angel to Gideon boosted his morale, and made him see himself as never before. ‘The LORD is with you, mighty warrior’. Encouragement brings out the best in individuals, staffs in any organization. This could be in words, in form of gifts, a pat on the back or simply saying thank you.
Most of us think wonderful things about people, but we never tell them. Praise becomes valuable only if you impart it. So today go out to encourage somebody. It is well!
DIVINE INSTRUCTION FOR THE DAY:
JUST AS TODAY’S MESSAGE INSTRUCTS, FIND ONE OR TWO PEOPLE WHO ARE DISCOURAGED OR DISTURBED OVER SOME ISSUES IN THEIR LIVES; ENCOURAGE AND PRAY FOR THEM. IT IS A SEED.
- Dear heavenly Father, open the eyes of my mind, let me see beyond the shortcomings of others.
- Today, let somebody’s hope get brighter through me, make me a part of someone’s success.
- Oh Lord, implant in me a sense of appreciation in every circumstance.
- Balm of Gilead, heal my wound of the past, let my sorrow be turned to joy, let me return home with great testimonies.
